about

This is about my dad Jack, his dad Thomas and the other railway workers on the LNER. The picture is the mighty loco 'Mallard' which they worked on. The fastest steamer ever.

The East Coast Main Line
by Graham Hamilton (2020)

You are up at first light when the birds start singing
A mug of sweet tea and you’re on your way
To clean out the firebox of that steam locomotive
And get the fire going for another working day.

Chorus
Roll down the road mighty Sir Nigel roll along Mallard and Hal o the Wynd
You’re all a fine sight on the LNE Railway but without old Thomas you can’t do a thing

Just a young lad when you joined the railway
Its a job for life they all said
Sign on the line, start as a fireman
And one day you’ll drive all them locos instead.

Roll down the road mighty Sir Nigel roll along Mallard and Hal o the Wynd
You’re all a fine sight on the LNE Railway but without my dad Jack you can’t do a thing

Shovelling coal as were crossing the border
Over her shoulder she’s shovelling steam
Down from Berwick, Newcastle and York
It’s a long hard haul it’s a hard day’s work.

Roll down the road mighty Sir Nigel roll along Mallard and Hal o the Wynd
You’re all a fine sight on the LNE Railway but without all the grafters you can’t do a thing

Here’s to the lasses and lads of the railway
Here’s to the Irish who laid down the track
Here’s a curse on the bastards who sold off our railways
When we get elected, we’ll take ‘em all back!

Because ---- The East Coast Main line is a mighty good road,
The East Coast road is the road to ride
Edinburgh Waverly to London Kings Cross get your ticket at the station
For the East Coast Main line!
